Fancy a snack?
Every year Boatshed exhibit at the Southampton International Boat Show and when I wander around I see so many things that I think would be useful to buy, however is it something I really need and will it just sit in the cupboard? Should I buy another waterproof coat or pair of deck shoes or succumb to the many gadgets that are on offer…
Well this year was no different but I did actually buy a gadget and it hasn’t sat in the cupboard, I have used it!
What did I buy? A Diablo (no, not the juggling set –although I can juggle) It’s a toasted sandwich maker but the difference is you don’t need electric, it’s easy to clean and small enough to stow away making it perfect for boats. It makes a deep, disc shaped, cooked snack and there is no limit to the variety of meals and snacks that can be made.
The Diablo has two sides which clamp together making the disc shape. It is coated with titanium which makes it strong and also non-stick to make cleaning easy.
How does it work:
- Place the bread on the inside face of the open Diablo, try and ensure that the full circle is covered with bread (white sliced bread seems to work the best)
- Load with your favourite filling and remember the Diablo is deep so pile the ingredients high, cheese and ham with a splash of BBQ sauce is easy and tasty
- Place the second slice of bread over the filling and close the maker
- Press together so it cuts the excess bread from around the sandwich and trim any excess using the blunt edge of a knife (the excess can be used as the base for your next sandwich)
- Clip the handles together and place on the stovetop, use a low heat until you are familiar with the timings
- Turn frequently and open occasionally to check the sandwich, when it’s golden brown it should be ready – be careful it will be hot inside!
There are so many tasty snacks that can be made including:
- Naan bread with curry
- Shortcrust pastry (pre-prepared sheets are easier to use) to make an apple pie
- Tortilla wrap for a burrito
- Pitta bread to make a calzone
So many tasty snacks can be made and enjoyed out on the water with minimum fuss. So far I’ve only tried sandwiches however I’m looking forward to trying some different snacks. If you can call this a gadget it certainly gets the thumbs up from me!
After you've visited us on stand B053 at the Southampton Boat Show 2016 and had a look at a selection of the 2000+ boats we have for sale, have a wander around - you might find that useful gadget!!
